Microsoft has revealed that its Xbox 360 (it doesn't even seem that long ago ) console has sold over 40 million units since its launch at the end of 2005.

According to figures released during the firm's financial earnings, the platform currently has a software attach rate of 8.8 games (lightweights ) per-console, resulting in software sales totalling 353.8 million.

In recent months, the system has suffered a sales dip, dropping by 12% compared to the same period last year. From January to the end of March this year, the machine shifted 1.5 million units worldwide.

Microsoft's upcoming motion-based hardware Project Natal is expected to have a bearing on sales when it arrives later this year.
