Couple of days late but....

Microsoft has confirmed that it will today (15th April 2010) officially discontinue Xbox Live support for the original Xbox console.

The service switch-off will mean that all original Xbox games can no longer be played online via an Xbox console or via backwards-compatibility on the Xbox 360.
Announcing the move in February, Microsoft's Marc Whitten said: "Your Xbox Live community has grown to 23 million strong. And as we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360.

"To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games."
The biggest causality from the switch-off will be Halo 2, which has retained a strong following among gamers since its release in November 2004.

To mark the occasion, developer Bungie has placed a series of goodwill messages on the Did You Know? section of the game's multiplayer menu.
One message said: "Thanks for playing. Seriously? More than five years after launch? You're awesome."

Another joked: "Title Update 4 adds Theater support, screenshots and Forge to Halo 2! Coming: NEVER."
