    Default Connection issues

I keep losing the connection to my router whilst playing. Very rarely do I manage to finish a complete game of anything before being booted off. I thought this a wifi problem so hard wired the xbox (wifi) to the router but I still get the same. I use an ASUS router, has anyone else experienced this problem ? The router has been set for gaming. Your help would be appreciated, an old timer in need of help. Thanks

    Welcome to the forums.

Could you supply me with the router model?

Have you done any port forwarding on your router to allow you access to Xbox Live?

Has this been an ongoing issue, or has it just occured?

Also, when you run the Xbox Live connection test, do you get any warnings? (Step-by-step wired connection)

Once I have this information, I will be able to advise you further I am in my lunch break at the moment, so if you haven't given me this information by the end of my lunch break, I will get to you when I get home from work

    Hi Ross,

Router model is ASUS, DSL-N11. 802.11n ADSL 2/2+ Modem router with 4 Ethernet Ports, 300Mbps.

Not sure what you mean by Port Forwarding but the router had a setting which said to allow games priority, simply a button to click which I did.

Yes it has been an ongoing issue, every time I go online with xbox I will spend a lot of time trying to reconnect.

No warnings from the xbox Live connection test, all seems to be ok on that front.

    Thank you for your time

    Hamish/

    Hi Hamish,

Could you do the following please:

    1. Assign your Xbox 360 a static IP address:

To set your Xbox 360 console’s IP settings

    1. On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
    2. Select Network Settings.
    3. Select WiredNetwork or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Select Configure Network.
    5. On the Basic Settings tab, select IP Settings.
    6. Select Manual.
    7. Select IP Address.
    8. Enter the unique IP address that you made up, and then select Done.
    9. Select Subnet Mask, enter your computer’s subnet mask, and then select Done.
    10. Select Gateway, enter your computer’s default gateway, and then select Done.
    11. Select Done.
    12. Press B on your controller and then test your connection again.

2.Follow the instructions here to open the ports on your Router to allow Xbox Live access.

    3. Turn off your routers game mode (just for now to see if it is causing any issues).

    4. Reboot your router.

If that doesn't work, it may be an issue with your routers firmware (I've just done a bit of research into your router and it seems to be notorious for having Xbox Live disconnection issues). If that doesn't work, if you let me know your firmware version, I will look into it and see if I can find a more suitable firmware for you.

    Hi Ross,

Tried what you suggetsed but it gave me a 'public port error' when trying to add at the final stages. I did manage to add a static IP address or at least I think I did. A message that came up on the x box after changing things said that my NAT setting was set at strict. Does this make a difference and if so how do I change that?

With ref to the firmware part, I contacted ASUS a while back when I first realised there was a problem and they did a firmware update for me then, to be honest I've still experienced the same problem. With you saying that ASUS is notorious for xbox live connection issues I may just buy a new router, any suggestions?

Thanks for your help so far, much appreciated you giving up your time for this. H/

You'll need to back track on everything you've followed above. The reason your NAT has gone strict, is that the the router has not allowed you to foward the ports (step 2).

If you want me to check if there is a newer version of the firmware available for you, I am more than happy to do so. I will just need to know what version you are running at the moment.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of upgrading your routers firmware to see if that will fix the issue, I would highly recommend the D-Link DSL-2740B. You should be able to pick it up on ebay for around £30. I have 3 Xbox 360's running on one (very few routers allow more than one Xbox 360 to run with Open NAT), all with open NAT and it hasn't let me down.

I think I'll try the new router option, seems simpler. Very much appreciated all your help with this. Ta H/
