An alleged Google ad has sparked rumours that the multiplayer beta for Treyarch's upcoming FPS, Call of Duty: Black Ops, will be exclusive to Xbox...

An alleged Google ad has sparked rumours that the multiplayer beta for Treyarch's upcoming FPS, Call of Duty: Black Ops, will be exclusive to Xbox 360.

The ad reportedly links to a beta website where users can sign up for the 'Xbox 360 exclusive multiplayer beta'. It also specifies September 1 - which timekeepers will note is today - as the start date.

Coincidentally, Treyarch has been gearing up for a multiplayer reveal later today. Community manager Josh Olin confirmed Treyarch would be announcing something later today through Twitter yesterday.

"So we're rehearsing for tomorrow's #CODBlackOps MP reveal... "

Treyarch's community manager also responded to the Google ad, saying it was not "official". However, he didn't deny the existence of the beta - or the exclusivity.

"Bing / Google / ads for a #CODBlackOps BETA are not official ads. As always, if I don't say it, it's not official!" tweeted Olin.

The quick fingers at Leakerz supposedly snapped a few pictures of the beta's website, which states the beta will be revealed at 7pm Pacific time (that's 2am UK time).

During E3, Treyarch said it would be working with Microsoft on some Black Ops exclusives for Xbox 360 players - could the multiplayer beta be one of those?

Treyarch recently confirmed it would release tools and support the mod community post release.
We’ve just made the Xbox 360 Wireless controller even better with a brand new version that includes a transforming D-pad. The engineers have come up with an ingenious solution with a d-pad that can go from a plus to a disc with the twist of the wrist.

The quality of sound that comes through Xbox 360 headsets will be significantly improved when Microsoft updates the Xbox 360 this autumn.

The refresh, designed to coincide with the launch of Kinect, will upgrade the codec and audio infrastructure that underpins the quality of voice communication from Xbox 360 to Xbox 360, and should make for clear chat between gamers when they play online, Xbox Live Studios boss Jerry Johnson said at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival this afternoon.

"The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that," Johnson explained.

"We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time.

"It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."

Microsoft introduced voice communication to the original Xbox with the November 2002 launch of Xbox Live.

The quality of sound has long been the focus of complaints from gamers, particularly those who favour team based multiplayer titles.

Some even prefer to use voice over internet protocol Skype to ensure every word is heard.

Microsoft has confirmed the new dashboard update for Xbox 360 will be available before the launch of Kinect in November.

Xbox Live's Ijaz Akram revealed the news to GamerZines while talking about the future of Xbox Live and how the “right level of engagement” between the community is needed to take the platform forward.

He explained, "You'll see that when we launch on November 10th with Kinect and soon before that we'll have a new dashboard update with all the great new features that come as part of Kinect and make Live a really good experience."

Akram couldn't give a release date though saying Microsoft hasn't decided a date yet. The new update will come with a new dashboard specifically designed for the motion controller including the ability to play movies using your hands gestures and voice.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game™ is the rock 'n' roll action love story for the eight-bit generation. Staying true to the graphic novels and upcoming movie, the game follows Scott Pilgrim's quest to date Ramona Flowers by defeating her seven evil exes.
The game is an arcade-style beat 'em up inspired by many classic retro games of the '80s and '90s. It features a four-player co-op mode where you can fight alongside Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Ramona to kick, punch, and beat your way through hordes of hipsters, emos, paparazzi, aliens, flying piggy banks (yes, flying piggy banks!), and much more. The eight-bit retro-gaming animations were created by the world-famous Pixel Artist Paul Robertson and the game features a soundtrack by chip-tune rockers Anamanaguchi.

According to reports, the latest game in the Halo series, which isn't due for release until next month, has already been downloaded early--and from all places, Microsoft's own Xbox Live Marketplace.

Joystiq reports that members of the game-modifying enthusiast site Game-Tuts.com were able to circumvent Microsoft's download key system to download fully licensed copies of the game to their Xbox 360 hard drive. Microsoft had made the full game available to reviewers as a download earlier in the week, though had put in a security measure that would only allow it to be accessed with an authorized redemption code.
According to a post on Game-Tut's forums, which has since been taken down (though is still archived on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 modding enthusiast site Se7ensins.com), the group that obtained the copy has no plans to leak or distribute it elsewhere. The Game-Tuts staff member who penned the post also insisted that the code they acquired is signed by Microsoft and will therefore play on unmodified Xbox 360 hardware.

Of course, this is not the first Halo title to make its way into the hands of gamers ahead of its public release. Nor is it the earliest such leak.
Halo 2 was famously leaked a full month ahead of its release by a European manufacturing plant back in 2004. Unlike this version of Reach, the game code was taken from a retail copy of the disc, then distributed through pirating channels. It also required that users have a modified version of the original Xbox to run the game code off a burned disc or hard drive install.

2007's release of Halo 3 followed suit, with a nearly complete version of the game leaking out to the Web two months ahead of the game's official release. Like the leak of the previous Halo title, this required users to run a modified version of the Xbox 360's system software, though this time around Microsoft was able to bite back, and banned those consoles from accessing its Xbox Live service for 7,992 years.

The most recent leak prior to Reach, was developer Bungie's last Halo game titled ODST, which some lucky French gamers got a full month ahead of its release. Though this time around it was not through manufacturing plants or unofficial leaks. Instead it was a handful of French retailers who broke the street date and sold the game early.

Multiplayer feature to be patched into Crystal Dynamics adventure game on September 28, the same day full game arrives on PlayStation 3 and PC.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was supposed to be the first outing to feature online multiplayer action for the solo adventuress. And it still will be, just not right away.

Developer Crystal Dynamics today announced that when Microsoft caps off the Xbox Live Summer of Arcade next week with the launch of Lara Croft, the game will not include the promised two-player online cooperative mode or leaderboard support or voice chat functionality. Instead, those features will be included in a free update to the game to be made available on September 28. That's also the date Lara Croft will launch on the PlayStation 3 and the Steam digital distribution PC gaming platform.

Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart told GameSpot the online portion of the game needed more development time before it could live up to the developer's promises but stressed that the single-player and offline cooperative modes would be delivered complete at launch.

"Everybody's disappointed, but we're also excited. We're making a stand to say we're not going to have somebody download the game on August 18, play it, and feel like we came in a little under par on the online portion. It was a tough decision, but I think we made the right decision."

After the game launches, Crystal Dynamics has three months of downloadable content offerings planned out. From October through December, the developer will launch a series of five add-ons for the game. The first three will be expansions featuring new "puzzle, exploration, and combat experiences," while the last two will include new playable characters for the game.

The studio did not say who the characters would be, but Stewart said they would be well-known characters pulled from a range of Eidos titles. In addition to Crystal Dynamics' own Legacy of Kain series, Eidos boasts a number of recognizable brands, including Hitman, Deus Ex, and Thief.
